  • What currency is used in Zimbabwe?

The accepted currency in Zimbabwe is the US Dollar (USD).

Bring cash, preferably small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20). Avoid $100 bills because change can be hard to come by.

In most places, you can use your debit and credit card. However, banks usually charge an international fee.

If you choose to use your debit or credit card, make sure you have informed your bank of your travel plans beforehand.

USD is highly recommended. If you would like to "feel" like a local with local currency, USD to Zimbabwean dollars (ZWL) can be arranged for you. Please let Davis or Thabile know if you want ZWL.

Note: It is not uncommon that stores and restaurants will give you ZWL back as change.

Example: You buy a Coke with $10 USD, and your change should be $9 USD. If the store does not have USD, they will give you 90 ZWL.

This is another reason to bring small denominations, but coins are not accepted.
